Artificial Intelligence changes the way we work, learn, communicate and consume. In our everyday life, AI-based systems play a very present role: streaming services recommend new movies, smart watches detect cardiac arrhythmia or guide drivers to free parking spaces in real-time. The use cases for AI in industrial applications are also manifold: language assistants and chatbots, systems for detection of tumours, industrial robots interacting with humans in the factory or autonomously driving cars. But we need clear guidelines as a basis for trust in this technology.

That is why the early development of a framework for action setting out the requirements in the field of standardisation is essential and necessary. The German Institute for Standardisation (DIN) and the German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies in DIN and VDE (DKE) have therefore published the German Standardization Roadmap on Artificial Intelligence on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi).

It provides orientation in this increasingly important field:

for companies, science and politics.

Standardisation Roadmaps - a successful tool for international cooperation

How helpful such a standardisation roadmap is for the international harmonisation of standards can be seen, for example, in the GPQI's cooperation with China. There, the sub-working group I4.0 is already promoting the internationalisation of the German Industry 4.0 standardisation roadmap together with the German SCI 4.0 and the Chinese Intelligent Manufacturing Standardisation Administration Group (IMSG). It contributes to the coherence of the international standardisation system for intelligent manufacturing.

With its recommendations for action, the German Artificial Intelligence Roadmap now provides a basis for innovative and secure standards of AI technologies for standardisation actors and players in quality infrastructure - both at national and international level.
