In March 2017, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has organised a symposium on the legal and regulatory framework for e-commerce in China, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi). Representatives from politics, business and science were invited to participate in the information and discussion event held in Berlin.

The event started with a detailed presentation of the current legal and regulatory framework as well as the Chinese institutional landscape in the area of cross-border e-commerce by Professor Wang Jian of the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing. Further focus was on the showcasing and legal interpretation of the latest Chinese bill on e-commerce from January 2017. Moreover, lectures on the current developments in standardization topics related to online trading in China were held by experts from the China Certification and Inspection Group (CCIC).

During the discussion rounds, participants expressed particular interest in the practical and political implications of the law on cross-border online trade activities with China. Subsequent to the symposium, it has been decided to further elaborate on these topics in further events and political dialogues.
