Securing the Internet of Things (IoT) Together: New Indo-German Publication

The Indo-German discussion paper “Securing the Internet of Things Together” was released at the 7th Annual Meeting of the Indo-German Working Group on Quality Infrastructure on 16 January 2020 in New Delhi. The discussion paper was developed by the Global Project Quality Infrastructure (GPQI) of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) in cooperation with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Data Security Council of India (DSCI).

The Indo-German discussion paper “Securing the Internet of Things Together” was released at the 7th Annual Meeting of the Indo-German Working Group on Quality Infrastructure on 16 January 2020 in New Delhi. The discussion paper was developed by the Global Project Quality Infrastructure (GPQI) of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) in cooperation with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Data Security Council of India (DSCI).

 

The number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as smart energy meters or internet-connected video surveillance cameras is growing around the world. This raises new questions for regulators concerning the interplay between security, safety, and consumer protection. India and Germany decided to explore their potential alignment of cybersecurity regulations, and corresponding standards and certification.

The discussion paper includes a comparison of regulatory approaches for IoT device security in India, Germany, the European Union (EU), and beyond. Specifically, it elaborates on the role of standardisation and conformity assessment in these regulations. It highlights key considerations for policymakers in this emerging field and aims to deepen the international discourse on harmonised approaches to securing IoT devices.

 

India and Germany cooperate within the Indo-German Working Group on Quality Infrastructure between the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and the Indian Ministry for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. The Working Group has the goal to reduce technical barriers to trade, strengthen product safety, and enhance consumer protection. BMWi has commissioned the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH – the German Agency for International Cooperation – to support the implementation of GPQI.
