INMETRO creates Working Group for the Modernization of the Brazilian Regulatory Model

Brazil

Following the start of the new presidency of INMETRO, a working group was created on 10 June 2020 to advise INMETRO on modernising its regulatory model.

On June 10, 2020, INMETRO announced the creation of a working group to advise INMETRO’s Presidency on the modernization of the its Regulatory Model (Grupo de Trabalho para Modernização do Modelo Regulatório do INMETRO - GTMRI). After changes in personnel, including the presidency and directors, GTMRI sets out to prepare a proposal for the modernization of INMETRO’s Regulatory Model.

The working group counts with representatives from INMETRO’s internal boards (e.g. Conformity Assessment and Legal Metrology boards) and from the Brazilian Network of Legal Metrology and Quality. One of its main task is to re-evaluate the “Novo Modelo Regulatório” proposal as of 2019, as well as to apply the new general guidelines from the government on the preparation for an analysis of regulatory impact, governance and risk management. The Brazilian Economic Freedom Law (nº 13.874/2019), which assures free market guarantees, will serve as an important guideline to the proposal’s impact assessment.

During the group's future debate sessions, it is expected that it will hold a public consultation on the new proposal for the Modernization of INMETRO's Regulatory Model once it is adjusted and settled. GPQI Brazil is currently evaluating possibilities to support the work of GTMRI.
