The National Committee (Komnas) for International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) in Indonesia held an online meeting on 16 July 2021 and highlighted the importance of Indonesia’s active participation in the IEC forum for consumer protection and competitiveness of local products.

During the meeting of the Komnas for IEC in Indonesia, the head of the National Standardisation Body (BSN), Mr Kukuh Achmad, emphasised the importance of Indonesia's active participation in IEC. The IEC develops electrotechnical standards at the international level. International IEC standards, together with conformity assessment, provide the technical framework that enables governments to build a national quality infrastructure.

Kukuh added that Indonesia's membership in the IEC Forum is an important step in the development of standardisation in Indonesia. Besides, he urged electronics and electricity stakeholders in Indonesia to actively participate in the IEC Forum. This is needed to protect consumers in the field of electrical engineering as well as electricity and to help local products to be successful in the global market.

Topics discussed at the IEC forum included the development of international standards and the application of certification/conformity assessment once the IEC standard is established.

Indonesia is a full member of IEC. Any country that can demonstrate that its National Committee complies with the IEC Constitution and Rules of Procedure can apply to become a full member of IEC. Indonesia is also a member of IECEE (IEC System for Conformity Testing and Certification of Electrotechnical Equipment and Components). With regard to Indonesia's membership in the IECEE forum, Kukuh stressed that Indonesia should constantly review it so that membership brings the maximum benefit. The IECEE CB Scheme, operated by the IEC System of Conformity Assessment Schemes for Electrotechnical Equipment and Components (IECEE), is an international system for mutual recognition of test reports and certificates dealing with the safety of electrical and electronic components, equipment and products.

At the meeting, Kukuh also requested that members of the Komnas for IEC, especially ministry representatives, to utilise the results of the CB (certification body) scheme. Countries can enhance their economic opportunities and ensure product safety and performance by adopting IEC International Standards.

Indonesia has proposed to be the host of annual IEC technical committee meeting in 2022, in which IEC Secretariat/Technical Committee 14 on Power Transformer has confirmed its willingness to hold the annual meeting in 2022 in Indonesia. Its IEC membership underlines Indonesia’s commitment to international IEC standards and the implementation of the IECEE system.
