India introduces new technical regulation for electrical equipment

On 11 November 2020, the Indian Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises (MoHI&PE) published an Electrical Equipment (Quality Control) Order, 2020 for low voltage switch- and controlgear.
The technical regulation will come into effect one year after its notification, i.e. in November 2021. It affects a number of different products and devices widely used in industrial applications, for example circuit-breakers, switches and starters (see list below).
The Indian standards referenced in the regulation are an adoption of certain parts of the IEC 60947 international series of standards for low-voltage switch- and controlgear by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
To comply with the regulation, it is mandatory for manufacturers to obtain a licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). It proves the conformity of their products to the relevant Indian standards. Upon obtaining the BIS licence, manufacturers shall use the Standard Mark on their products.
