On 1 April 2020 the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced the addition of twelve product categories to the compulsory registration scheme (CRS) for electronics and information technology (IT) products. It includes products such as LED modules, headphones, and keyboards (see list below). The implementation of the notification will start on 1 October 2020.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) introduced the CRS in 2012 as a certification scheme for domestically manufactured and imported products. Under the scheme, it is mandatory for manufacturers to get their products registered and tested to the relevant standards at BIS accredited laboratories in India. Through the registration they receive the right to use the Standard Mark for Registration.

The CRS was first adopted by MeitY for notifying compulsory registration of electronic products placed on the Indian market. Before the addition of these twelve product categories, 44 electronics and IT products and five product categories in the area of photovoltaic were covered by the CRS (see BIS website).

The notification of MeitY including the full list of additional product categories can be found here. For further information on BIS certification schemes, please refer to our publication “Overview of India’s Quality Infrastructure”.
