Cables, Steel, Toys: New Draft Technical Regulations Announced in India

In November 2019, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) of the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry has published several new draft Quality Control Orders (QCOs). QCOs are issued by Indian regulators to introduce technical regulations such as mandatory certification requirements based on Indian standards.
India has a small number of technical regulations in comparison to markets like the EU. Based on several discussions at national expert forums and among Indian government officials, it becomes clear that India intends to close these ‘regulatory gaps’ by issuing new technical regulations.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is specified as the certifying authority for the goods or articles listed in the draft quality control orders.
