With a special meeting in July, the Brazilian Technical Standards Association (ABNT) reactivated the CE-021:003.215 (Study Commission on Information Technology in Health). The Study Commission is now part of the ABNT/CB-021 (Brazilian Committee on Information Technology and Digital Transformation). Finally, this committee has included all special study commissions that directly work on digital transformation in the Brazilian standardisation landscape.

In Brazil the debate on Information Technology in Health is gaining attention. Key drivers of this development were the approval by the Brazilian Parliament of permanent telehealth practices on the national territory (Law Proposal 1998/2020) and its revision by the Brazilian Senate.

Moreover, the publication of telemedicine and telehealth guidelines by health professionals of the Brazilian Federal Council of Medicine (Resolution 2314/2022) pushed the topic.

By engaging with other relevant institutions, ABNT further shapes Brazil’s digital health strategy with the topic of standardisation for Information Technology in health.

GPQI has offered technical support to the dialogue among the different stakeholders. A close dialogue between the private and public sector, quality infrastructure institutions and technical experts is key to develop census-based standards for the digital health landscape.

This international dialogue already led to results for the standardisation of information technology - as seen with the previous meeting between ABNT, the Brazilian National Industry Confederation (CNI) and GPQI on circular economy. The meeting addressed important standardisation challenges, such as interoperability and scalability. Both are also important in the digital health sector.
